Meditation and Mindfulness in Hampton Roads

Meditation is the practice of training your attention, often by focusing on the breath, a word or the present moment. Mindfulness brings that same calm, curious attention into everyday life. Whether you want to manage stress, sleep better or simply slow down, you will find meditation teachers, classes and groups in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Williamsburg and across Hampton Roads.

Ways to practice locally

  • Guided meditation classes: a teacher talks you through each step, which is ideal for beginners.
  • Mindfulness courses: multi-week programs that build a daily practice, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
  • Meditation groups and sitting circles: regular group practice, often free or donation-based.
  • Yoga nidra and sound meditation: deeply restful practices done lying down.
  • Retreats: half-day, full-day or weekend retreats for a deeper break from routine.

How to choose a teacher or class

Look for a beginner-friendly class or an introductory course, and ask about the teacher's background and the tradition they teach. If you are working through trauma, depression or anxiety, a trauma-informed teacher and support from a therapist can make practice feel safer.

Do I have to sit cross-legged to meditate?

No. You can meditate sitting in a chair, lying down or even walking. Comfort matters more than posture.

What if my mind will not stop wandering?

That is completely normal. Noticing your mind has wandered and gently coming back is the practice itself.

How long should I meditate each day?

Even five to ten minutes a day can be a good start. Many people slowly build up to 20 minutes or more.
